Fire and Aviation Discussion for Sandpoint, Idaho
Fire Weather Discussion as of 6:50 p.m. PDT, Sunday, June 8, 2025:
Unseasonably dry and hot conditions will prevail throughout the next 24-48 hours with record hot high temperatures possible Monday and Tuesday. This will continue to accelerate the rapid drying and curing of fine fuels across the region with the dry and breezy conditions along with the lack of significant rainfall in over 2 weeks. Winds will pick up Monday afternoon from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph across ridge tops. Overnight humidity recoveries will be good to excellent on valley floors but only poor to fair at best in thermal belts on slopes and hillsides along with higher elevations. Minimum relative humidity values will drop to between 15-25% Monday afternoon. Any ignitions that occur will have the potential to spread rather quickly with the relatively dry fine fuels we already have as has been seen with recent fires in the region.
Aviation discussion as of 6:55 p.m. PDT Sunday, June 8, 2025 valid through 10:00 p.m. PDT Monday, June 9, 2025:
VFR conditions will prevail through the period with some smoke layers aloft around 25,000 to 30,000 feet from distant Canadian wildfires. Winds will be light overnight then pick up from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph Monday afternoon. Density altitude may be a problem on Monday afternoon due to hot surface temperatures.
